The AAU Girls' Basketball Program was established in 1972 as part of the AAU Junior Olympic program. Prior to 1972, the AAU Men's and Women's Committee conducted basketball championships, which included a single junior division. The National Championships started in two age divisions (15u &18u) and have expanded to nine (10u through 18u) plus the Junior Olympic Games, the NICs (National Invitational Championships, now called Division II National Championships) and the 10 thru 13 Western Championship. In 2003, 751 teams competed for ten AAU Girls' Basketball National Championship crowns, with 288 additional teams playing in our D-II National Championships.image
